The races held on the new land were unlike any other in the state. This was motocross. This European-style racing emphasized quickness and maneuverability instead of brute power and speed. In essence, motocross is set up on a cross-country course featuring several tight turns, limited straight-aways and jumps. The racing surface itself is composed mostly of sand and mud and to overcome such difficult terrain, riders must combine lightness, speed, and physical strength with a great knowledge of off-road bike tactics. Motocross racing does not enjoy the popularity it does in Europe, where literally tens of thousands of fans form the boundary of the courses, and riders do not enjoy the prestige and financial rewards of national sports heroes. Despite this, riders and spectators who enjoy motocrossing in Iowa rank the New Hartford track with the best in the United States. Turnouts varied, but racing was a financial necessity to the Rambling Wheels’ success.
