During the reign of movies in the theaters throughout much of Cedar Falls, the cry of Blue Laws could be heard in the 1920's. The controversy centered around whether to show movies on Sundays at the Regent and Empress theaters on Main Street. Some people of Cedar Falls thought that showing movies on Sunday was pure evil. As one person stated, "The movies could get pretty sexy, even in those days. They wouldn't put a couple of nude people on the screen, but they got the idea across, no doubt about it." The city put the law to a vote and nearly 1,900 voters turned out. Compared to only 1,200 voters for a city election a month earlier demonstrates the importance of this issue. The end result turned out to be 1,451 for the movies and 437 against the Sunday movies.
