The first school in the county was the Old School House, a highly valued building for the whole community. It also housed several of the first churches before they were able to afford buildings of their own. In its earliest years the school house was the home of 1st United Methodist, 1st Presbyterian, and St. Luke's Episcopal churches. Finally, 1st Baptist purchased the building for $550 in 1864. By the time the Baptists had acquired the property, it had fallen into a state of disrepair. They put a new building on the land the summer after the purchase and planned to use the original building as a parsonage, but no evidence shows whether or not this happened. The building was eventually purchased and moved off the property to be used as a home.
