Many Cedar Falls homes had their own iceboxes, a primitive refrigeration device. One of the most popular models was the Herrick Company's three door model that was made in 1891. The Herrick Company was located in Waterloo and specialized in the manufacturing of' "refrigerators." The first models were made of wood and eventually evolved into metal boxes and into what we now know as electric refrigerators. These Herrick iceboxes could hold up to 100 pounds of ice. Also, many homes had outside doors to their iceboxes to avoid deliverymen tracking dirt into their kitchens. Some Cedar Falls houses still display these outside doors on the sides of the house.
