A review of the current mission and values of the Black Hawk County 4-H program shows that it has many of the same goals it has always had but it also has expanded to meet the needs of all of the youth in the county. The local 4-H's mission is to create supportive environments for culturally diverse youth and adults to reach their full potential. While the exact wording of the goals may have changed, Black Hawk County 4-H continues to emphasize community-focused experiential learning in order to develop such attributes as a positive self-concept and communication, decision making, citizenship, and leadership skills in its members. What began as eight corn and garden clubs today serves over 400 rural and urban youth in twenty-six 4-H clubs across Black Hawk County and utilizes the efforts of over sixty volunteers and five county extension agents. Certainly, then, 4-H is an important institution in Black Hawk County that will continue to grow to meet the needs of the county's youth as it has done for nearly a century.
