Competition encouraged the placing of ads in the local newspapers to try to attract new customers. Over the years these ads changed, as the crowds that they were trying to attract changed. In 1894, one of the first slogans for a restaurant was "Clean parlors for ladies and gentlemen." Other slogans were: "Try our Family Dinners, Like Home," "By our food shall we be known," "Eat with us," "Where to eat - and what to eat," "Good food at moderate prices," "Where the crowd goes."
